Architectural Treasures—A Frozen History of Western Architecture
The greatest allure of Jinwan Plaza lies in the fact that it is, in itself, an open-air museum of architecture.
The European Architectural Ensemble: A Moving Architectural Symphony
The buildings surrounding the square stand as a grand synthesis of Western architectural schools:
- The Opulence of the Baroque: Dynamic curves and intricate ornamentation display a dramatic tension.
- The Natural Grace of Classicism: Rigorous proportions and fluid lines convey a rational aesthetic beauty.
- The Ethereal Quality of Romanticism: Soaring towers and red-tiled roofs evoke a sense of poetic imagination.
- The Poetic Fusion of Eclecticism: A blend of diverse elements forms a harmonious and unified whole.
Standing amidst this architectural complex, the various building forms resemble the distinct notes of a musical composition—rising and falling in dynamic interplay. The spatial sequence they create unfolds like a moving symphony, captivating the heart and stirring the soul.
Vistas from the Rooftops: The Rhythm of Mansard Red Tiles
Viewed from the vantage point of the high-rises, the French Mansard-style red-tiled roofs reveal a pattern of rhythmic regularity. The rooftops form a multi-directional mosaic—at once refined and diverse—where each individual tile contributes to a powerful rhythm, akin to dancing musical notes, embodying a primal aesthetic beauty. Interspersed among them are meticulously designed towers—soaring high with soft, fluid curves and graceful contours—tracing a rhythmic silhouette against the sky; they serve as the crowning touch, the pièce de résistance, of the entire square.
A Catalog of Windows: Craftsmanship in the Details
The windows of Jinwan Square constitute an exhibition in themselves: single windows, composite windows, square-headed windows with right angles, arched windows, windows beneath gable pediments; shapes ranging from circular, flattened-circular, and elliptical to semi-circular. The window lintels feature a variety of arches—semi-circular, pointed triangular, flat, and segmental. These exquisite decorative details ensure that every moment spent pausing to observe is a moment worth savoring.
Light and Shadow on the Haihe River: A Flowing Urban Poem
The Jiefang Bridge and the Century Clock: Guardians of Time
At the northern terminus of Jinwan Square, the century-old Jiefang Bridge spans the Haihe River. A rare surviving example of early modern Chinese bridge engineering, its structure is designed to open and close—a living fossil of architectural history. The Century Clock, situated by the bridge and originally built to welcome the year 2000, has now become a timeless landmark of Tianjin. On the hour, the clock face undergoes a gradual color transformation—shifting from gold to blue, then to purple—and as the chimes ring out, the entire square seems to be transported into the nostalgic atmosphere of a vintage film.
The Waterfront Platform: Up Close with the Haihe River
Spanning 10,000 square meters along the riverbank, the square's waterfront platform offers a superb vantage point for admiring the scenery of the Haihe River. Leaning against the railing to gaze into the distance, one sees Tianjin Station standing majestically on the opposite bank, flanked by the historic Jiefang Bridge and the modern Chifeng Bridge at either end—a breathtaking panorama that is truly a feast for the eyes.
