Origin: Urban Vision and Ecological Mission

Furong Ancient Town

The initial concept was to introduce a wilderness into the city.
In the 1990s, with the rapid development of Shanghai as an international metropolis, citizens' demand for high-quality leisure and cultural education grew daily. At that time, traditional urban zoos could no longer satisfy people's desire to "observe wild animals in a more natural environment." In 1995, a wildlife park with lofty ideals, aiming to bridge the gap between the city and nature, was established. Its establishment was not only for entertainment, but also carried the important mission of species conservation, science education, and injecting ecological vitality into the concrete jungle.

The Path of Development: From Introduction to Conservation
The growth of the Shanghai Wild Animal Park is a history of its evolution from animal exhibits to a comprehensive conservation institution.
- Groundbreaking Opening (1995): As China's first national-level wildlife park located far from the city center, it opened and pioneered a new tour model that combined drive-through visits with walking areas, causing a sensation at the time.
- Expansion and population enrichment: The park has continued to expand, and has successively built special exhibition areas such as the drive-through predator zone, giant panda pavilion, penguin pavilion, and monkey world. The number and variety of animal populations have been continuously enriched, making it one of the most important ex-situ conservation bases for wild animals in East China.
- Concept Upgrade: From the early days of simple display, the zoo has gradually evolved into a modern zoo integrating "conservation, education, scientific research, and entertainment." A breeding base has been established, successfully breeding several rare species such as golden monkeys, giant pandas, and cheetahs.
- Experience Innovation: By introducing an internationally renowned circus theater and developing a variety of animal behavior displays and interactive feeding programs, the tour experience has been elevated from "seeing" to "feeling" and "knowing," attracting millions of visitors annually.

The Natural Kingdom – A Panoramic View of Life Diversity
The natural charm of the Shanghai Wild Animal Park lies in its efforts to simulate the native environment and showcase the authentic behavior of animals.

- Enter the Predator Zone – The Call of the Wild: This is the soul of the park's experience. Board a specially designed feeding vehicle or sightseeing bus and drive into simulated habitats such as the open African savanna and Asian forests. Witness firsthand the majestic power of the Siberian tiger, the relaxed family antics of the African lions, the endearing clumsiness of the bears, and the swift movements of the cheetahs. As the feeding vehicle passes by, the moment a predator approaches the window delivers an unparalleled visual impact and a raw, awe-inspiring experience.
- Walking Tour of the Fairies - A Close Encounter:
- The Glory of National Treasures - Giant Panda Pavilion: Visiting the adorable giant pandas and watching them leisurely munch on bamboo and play is a star experience that will never fade.
- Primate Paradise: Observe the agility and wisdom of various monkeys in "Monkey World" and "Baboon Island", which is like a vivid lesson in primate social behavior.
- Water and Flying Birds: Admire the elegant waterfowl at Swan Lake, listen to their melodious songs in the bird area, and experience the harmonious beauty of the ecosystem.
- Habitat creation: The park focuses on vegetation greening and habitat enrichment, striving to provide animals with a living environment close to nature, and also creating an immersive "jungle adventure" atmosphere for visitors.

Humanistic Interaction – A Bridge Between Science and Fun
This place not only showcases animals, but also aims to impart knowledge, inspire compassion, and build a bridge for emotional connection between humans and animals.

- International Circus Theatre: A modern theatre that can accommodate thousands of people, featuring daily spectacular circus performances that combine animal behavior displays, acrobatics, and dance. Galloping horses, saluting elephants, parrots doing math... experience the intelligence of animals and the ingenuity of human training amidst laughter and joy.
- Science Education and Animal Behavior Demonstrations: The park features several scheduled science education sessions and animal behavior demonstrations, such as tiger hunting demonstrations, elephant lessons, and sea lion shows. Trainers will explain animal habits, conservation knowledge, and demonstrate natural behaviors, making the activities highly educational.
- Interactive Animal Park: This is a paradise for families with children. Children can hand-feed gentle animals such as alpacas and goats, or see newborn baby animals in the nursery, fostering love and responsibility.
- Themed pavilions and sculptures: The park is dotted with whimsical animal-themed sculptures and science information signs. Even the rest pavilions and restaurants incorporate animal elements, reflecting the ingenuity and humanistic care in the design.

Photography Tips:
> - Shooting from a moving vehicle: Be sure to sit by the window, use a telephoto lens, turn off the flash, and capture the animals in their most natural poses. When shooting from a moving vehicle, be sure to increase the shutter speed.
- Prime shooting spots in the pedestrian area: In front of the glass curtain wall of the Giant Panda Pavilion, you can take clear close-up shots; by the Swan Lake, you can photograph birds with the reflection on the water as a background.
> - Shooting at the performance venue: The lighting in circus performances is complex and the movements are fast, so it is recommended to use a camera with high sensitivity and fast focusing capabilities.
> - Pet Interaction: Crouch down to be at eye level with children and small animals to capture heartwarming moments.

How to get there: A seamless connection guide
Shanghai Wild Animal Park is located in the suburbs of Pudong, with convenient public transportation and even more flexible options for those driving.
- Subway + Shuttle (Recommended): Take Metro Line 16 to Wildlife Park Station, then transfer to Huinan Bus Route 6 or a shuttle bus (operating hours need to be confirmed) to reach the main entrance.

- Tourist shuttle bus: Shanghai Tourist Distribution Center may open direct shuttle bus services during specific seasons or holidays.
- Taxi/Ride-hailing: More expensive from the city center, but time is controllable.

Best time to visit
Shanghai Wild Animal Park is suitable for all seasons, but the comfortable climate in spring and autumn makes for the best outdoor experience.
- Spring and autumn (March-May, September-November): The climate is mild, neither too hot nor too cold, and animals are active, making it the best time for long outdoor walking tours.
- Summer (June-August): The weather is hot, so you can choose to visit in the morning or evening, and at noon you can visit the indoor venues or watch the circus performance. Be sure to take precautions against sunburn, mosquitoes, and stay hydrated.
- Winter (December-February): Some animals that are sensitive to the cold may be kept indoors. The outdoor area may be a bit desolate, but there will be few visitors, making for a quiet visit. Some outdoor performances may be adjusted.
Important Note: Try to avoid peak times on public holidays and weekends, otherwise long queues may form in the drive-through area and popular exhibition halls. A weekday visit will provide a better experience.

Tickets and accommodation options
- Ticket options:
- Adult ticket: Includes park entrance ticket and sightseeing bus tour of the area.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
