Origin: Canal Wharf and Major Industrial and Commercial Town

Furong Ancient Town

The name "Xiaohe" signifies a crucial point where waterways converge.
The name "Xiaohe" (Little River) doesn't refer to the narrowness of the waterway, but rather to its geographical location. During the Southern Song Dynasty, this area was an important transshipment hub for goods in Hangzhou. An artificially excavated canal connected the Grand Canal with the Yuhangtang River, and this canal was called "Xiaohe." Streets were formed along the river, and markets were established along its banks; this street extending along Xiaohe became known as "Xiaohe Straight Street." It was once a thriving commercial center in northern Hangzhou, where goods such as silk, grain, timber, and aquatic products were gathered and transshipped. Shops lined both banks, and boats came and went, creating the magnificent scene described as "Ten miles of silver lake villas, the most beautiful is Xiaohetou."

The Road to Rebirth: From Dilapidated Dwellings to Living Museum
The modern story of Xiahe Straight Street is a successful example of urban memory rescue and living preservation:
Flourishing Industry and Commerce (Late Qing Dynasty and Early Republic of China): The area was filled with shops, workshops, pawnshops, teahouses and guilds, with a typical "front and back workshops, shops downstairs and residences upstairs" layout, which is a testament to the development of national industry and commerce and shipping in modern Hangzhou.
Silence and Decline (Mid-to-late 20th Century): With the rise of land transportation and the decline of water transportation, the neighborhoods gradually fell into disrepair, becoming old residential areas with poor infrastructure and unsatisfactory living conditions, facing the fate of demolition.
Protection and Regeneration (Early 21st Century): The Hangzhou Municipal Government adopted a "protective restoration" model, which involved not large-scale demolition and construction, but restoring the buildings to their original appearance, improving internal infrastructure, and encouraging the original residents to return. This "minimal intervention, restoration to its original state" model successfully preserved the historical features and authentic life of the neighborhood.
The integration of culture and life (to date): The renovated Xiahe Straight Street has attracted artisans, designers, and art shop owners to set up studios, cafes, and specialty shops, while preserving the original residents' living scenes. This coexistence of old and new makes it not only a tourist attraction but also a "living neighborhood museum."

Must-see spectacle: Waterfront scenery and alleyway life

Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town

The charm of Xiahe Straight Street lies in its pleasantly scaled streets and alleys, well-preserved architectural texture, and the lazy yet genuine sense of life that permeates the air and the waterfront.

Nature's Creation—The Breath and Pulse of the Canal
The canal is the eternal backdrop and soul of the neighborhood.

The lingering charm of the wharf where three rivers converge: Standing at the street corner or on the small bridge spanning the river, one can clearly see the main channel of the Grand Canal, the tranquil Yuhangtang River, and the smaller tributary rivers meeting here. This was once a bustling wharf with countless sails. Although the throngs of merchant ships are no longer seen, the occasional sand-carrying boats, water buses, and the riverside wharves (stepped wharves) silently testify to the past busyness of this World Heritage waterway. The riverside wharves are excellent spots for taking photos and experiencing waterfront life.

A picturesque scene unfolds along the waterfront through the four seasons: In spring, willows sway gently along the banks, and roses peek out from between white walls and black tiles; in summer, dense shade brings coolness to the stone-paved paths; in autumn, the sky is high and the clouds are light, making the canal exceptionally expansive; in winter, if snow falls, covering the black tiles, it creates an even more picturesque scene. No matter the season, the quietly flowing canal sets a soothing and tranquil tone for the neighborhood.

Humanistic craftsmanship – frozen time and flowing life
Every house and every shop here is a page of history that can be read.

Architectural Style – A Sample of Jiangnan Folk Residences from the Late Qing Dynasty to the Early Republican Era: The buildings in the neighborhood are mostly one- or two-story brick and wood structures, with white walls, black tiles, and wooden doors and windows. The most distinctive feature is the "shop downstairs, residence upstairs" layout, where the ground floor is used as a shop or living room facing the street, and the second floor is used for living. Walking through the alleys, one can see exquisite gable walls, carved wooden railings, and various old-fashioned window frames.
Unique Shops – A Symbiosis of Art and Tradition: The neighborhood is home to many distinctive shops.
Independent studios: such as pottery, leather goods, blue calico, metalwork and other handicraft workshops, where the owners often create in the shop, and tourists can observe and even experience it.
Artistic Spaces: Riverside cafes, teahouses, bookstores, and flower shops offer excellent views and are great places to while away the time.
Traditional old shops: Occasionally you can still find one or two old barbershops or small general stores that have been passed down through generations, full of nostalgic atmosphere.
Everyday Life – The Most Touching Thing About Xiahe Straight Street is that it hasn't become a completely "touristy" area. You might see local residents washing clothes, sunbathing, or playing chess by the river, or smell the aroma of food wafting from a window. This authentic atmosphere of daily life, harmoniously coexisting with the exquisite artsy shops, constitutes its unique appeal.

Photography Tips:
Classic street scene: In the early morning or on a weekday morning, take photos of clean, deserted cobblestone streets and buildings on both sides for the best lighting.
Riverbank Portraits: Portraits featuring people against the backdrop of canals and ancient riverbanks, creating a strong sense of story.
The beauty of details: Focusing on weathered wooden doors, hanging signs, potted plants on windowsills, cats, and other details of life.
Night view and reflections: When the lanterns are lit at night, take pictures of the lights reflected in the water by the river, which is warm and tranquil.
Drone warning: This area is close to the Grand Canal waterway and residential areas, and flight restrictions are strict. Drone use is not recommended.

Five things you must do to unlock the complete river journey
1. Walk along the bluestone path and touch a century of history.
Pace: Slow down, walk from the east end to the west end, and then venture into any side alley. Don't just walk along the main street; surprises are often hidden in the alleys.
Experience: Touch the cool bluestone slabs and rough wooden doors with your hands to feel the texture of time in the materials themselves.
2. Spend half a day at a riverside teahouse, enjoying the tranquility of the canal.
Key point: Choose a riverside teahouse or coffee shop with a second floor or outdoor seating.
Experience: Order a cup of Longjing tea or coffee, watch the boats occasionally passing by on the canal, think of nothing, and simply enjoy the sunshine and breeze. This is the best way to experience the essence of Xiaohe Straight Street.
3. Visit a craft workshop and take away a piece of craftsmanship.
Treasure hunt: Stroll into any workshop that interests you and watch the artisans create their art.
Experience: You can try making a simple leather pendant, pottery piece, or indigo-dyed handkerchief yourself. This unique souvenir is far more meaningful than ordinary goods.
4. Savor a piece of Jiangnan tea snack and appreciate the elegance on your palate.
Taste: There are shops selling traditional Jiangnan snacks such as Dingsheng cake, osmanthus cake, and orange peel cake in the neighborhood.
Experience: Buy a few pieces, enjoy them with some tea by the river, and savor the sweetness and delicacy of Jiangnan.
5. Waiting for the evening lights to illuminate the night, to encounter the gentle night.
Time: Stay until sunset and wait for the street lanterns to light up one by one.
Experience: As the daytime hustle and bustle gradually fades away, the warm yellow lights bathe the white walls and gray tiles in a soft glow, and the reflections on the canal surface are mesmerizing. The atmosphere is completely different from that of the daytime, and is more tranquil and romantic.

Suggested tour routes
Xiahe Straight Street is not large, but it is worth exploring in detail. It is recommended to allocate half a day to a full day, and it can easily connect with surrounding canal attractions.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
