 Epic of the Earth - The Living Heritage of Quaternary Glaciers
The birth of the Dagu Glacier is a chronicle of the Earth spanning millions of years. It is one of the most magnificent products of the Quaternary glacial period. Over a long geological period, massive ice caps once covered mountains, but gradually retreated with climate change, leaving behind today's rare and highly accessible modern mountain glacier group. There are 13 modern glaciers developed in the glacier area, which are connected at the beginning and end. The ice bodies are crystal clear and present a dreamy blue-green tone in the sunlight, known as the "sapphire of the Western Sichuan Plateau". It is not only a landscape, but also a living archive for interpreting climate change on Earth.

 Legends of the World - From the Secret Realm to the Window of the World
The modern story of Dagu Glacier is an epic tale of discovery and protection that goes from a secluded sanctuary to the world stage
Eternal slumber: For a long time, it has been hidden by the banks of the San'ao Snow Mountain, only a sacred "guardian mountain" in the hearts of local Tibetan compatriots, and little known to the outside world.
Scientific discovery: It was first scientifically identified by Japanese scientists through satellite imagery and named after its location on the "Dagu Zangzhai", thus entering the field of geography.
Development and Protection: Launch tourism development while strictly protecting the ecology, and build environmentally friendly boardwalks and world-class sightseeing cableways. In 2008, it was named "China's Colorful Glacier - Ice and Snow Paradise"; In 2020, it became a stunning filming location for the popular movie "Captain China" with its unparalleled natural scenery, stunning the world in one fell swoop.
Sustainable model: The scenic area always adheres to the priority of ecological protection, and protects this fragile ecology that is highly vulnerable to climate change through measures such as limiting daily passenger flow, full battery transportation, and removing all garbage. It has become an important model for the sustainable development of global glacier tourism.

 Natural Creation - Symphony of Ice and Light
The natural landscape of Dagu Glacier is a visual feast about purity, color, and grandeur.
Pure Ice: The Time Capsule of the Planet
Glacier Observation Deck: This is the pinnacle of the journey. Standing on the observation deck, before my eyes are the undulating white ice fields, with huge ice tongues seemingly pouring down from the sky. The surface of the glacier is covered with deep ice fissures and mysterious glacial lakes, shimmering with a faint blue light in the sunlight. This is one of the few glacier hinterlands in the world that ordinary tourists can easily reach, with every step stepping on a million years of history.
Dongcuo Riyuehai: a high mountain lake embedded at the foot of a glacier. The lake changes colors such as milky white, emerald green, and deep blue with the seasons and light, and is said to be a precious mirror for fairies to dress up. In summer, wildflowers surround the lake; In winter, the lake freezes over and blends seamlessly with the glaciers, creating a serene and heavenly atmosphere.
Glacier U-shaped valley: a typical glacial erosion landform, with steep and smooth rock walls on both sides of the wide valley, recording the enormous transport and erosion power of ancient glaciers, and serving as a natural classroom for learning geological knowledge.
Brilliant Colors: A Color palette for the changing seasons
The world's most beautiful colorful forest: under the Dagu Glacier Mountain, there is the largest and most colorful forest in Asia. Every year from the end of September to the beginning of November, the 80 mile gallery stretches from the valley bottom to the mountain top, interweaving dozens of colors such as goose yellow, dark green, crimson, and brown brown, forming a magnificent oil painting with the snow-white mountaintop and the deep blue sky, known as the "photographer's paradise".
High Mountain Rhododendron Sea: From May to June, from an altitude of 2000 meters to over 4000 meters, different varieties of rhododendrons bloom one after another, ranging from delicate pink to intense purple, decorating the majestic mountains into romantic gardens.
Brilliant Starry Sky: Due to its high altitude and thin and pure air, this is one of the top night sky observation sites in China. After nightfall, the Milky Way is like practice, and the stars are within reach, making it a holy land for astrophotography and stargazing meditators.

 Humanistic Charm - Hymn of Life in the Foothills
At the foot of the glacier lies the thriving Tibetan and Qiang civilization, injecting a warm soul into this polar landscape.
Tibetan Qiang ancient villages: scattered deep in the colorful forests, like a paradise on earth. The unique stone and wood structure residential houses, brightly colored window lattice murals, fluttering prayer flags, and towering white pagodas constitute a rich Ando Tibetan style. Visitors can go into Tibetan homes, taste buttered tea, tsamba, and listen to ancient legends.
Loges Mountain Hiking Area: This is a pilgrimage route full of religious and cultural atmosphere. Along the way, prayer flags are used for hunting, and Mani piles stand tall. The final destination is the sacred Mount Loges, which is devoutly worshipped by local Tibetan compatriots. Hiking here not only allows you to appreciate forests, waterfalls, and meadows, but also to feel the peaceful power of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature, and between humans and faith.
Red cultural memory: Heishui County was an important area passed by the Red Army during the Long March, and many red relics are preserved near the Dagu Glacier. This rich history, along with magnificent natural scenery and unique ethnic culture, together constitute the profound connotation of this land.

Photography tips:
The best glacier panoramic camera position is at the 4860 meter observation deck, which can use a wide-angle lens to capture the vastness of the ice sheet;
The Golden Monkey Sea and Zenatso are classic locations for capturing the reflection of snow capped mountains, with the best time being in the early morning or evening when there is no wind;
When shooting colorful forests, attention should be paid to the lighting. Side backlighting can outline the translucent texture of the leaves, and the morning mist that permeates the forest is a natural filter;
Starry sky photography requires carrying a sturdy tripod, a large aperture wide-angle lens, and taking care to keep warm

Travel Guide: Transportation, Accommodation, and Seasons

Furong Ancient Town

How to reach: Seamless Connection Guide
The Dagu Glacier is located on the western Sichuan Plateau, and transportation is mainly by road.
From Chengdu: The most mainstream way is to drive or take a tourist shuttle bus. Take the Wenma Expressway to Maoxian, then follow the 347 National Highway to Heishui County, which takes about 5-6 hours by car. The road conditions along the way are good, but there are many winding mountain roads.
In series from other scenic spots: you can come from Jiuzhaigou Valley Scenic and Historic Interest Area (about 4 hours' drive) and Huanglong (about 3.5 hours' drive), which is very suitable for combining into a classic northwest Sichuan loop line.
Important notice: The scenic area implements a strict system of environmentally friendly vehicles, and all tourists need to transfer to a unified sightseeing vehicle at the tourist center to enter. Self driving vehicles can only park in the parking lot outside the entrance of the scenic area.

 Best Travel Time
Dagu Glacier is charming all year round, but autumn (October November) is widely recognized as the peak of beauty and the most enriching experience.
Autumn season: At this time, there is a magnificent 80 mile colorful forest at the foot of the mountain, and a clean ice and snow world at the top. Observing the four seasons from one mountain, the sense of hierarchy is invincible, and the climate is relatively stable.
Summer Cool Season: Glaciers melt, revealing more dark blue ice bodies. The mountains are lush with greenery, and rhododendrons bloom, making it a great time to escape the heat and admire high-altitude flowers.
Winter quiet season: The entire valley is covered in silver, with the largest glacier area and extremely pure and magnificent snow scenery. But the climate is extremely cold, and some roads may be restricted by snow cover, so the opening situation needs to be confirmed.
Spring recovery season: As the ice and snow gradually melt, wildflowers begin to bloom, and there are fewer tourists, it is suitable for travelers who like tranquility.

Accommodation Options
First choice outside the scenic area
Yangrong Hada and other boutique Tibetan villages: located near the scenic area, they are already a scenic spot. Being able to deeply experience Tibetan culture, with good accommodation conditions and distinctive catering, it is the first choice for photography and experiential tourists.
Heishui County Hotel: There are many choices, ranging from comfortable to high-end hotels, making dining and shopping more convenient. It is suitable for tourists who have high requirements for accommodation standardization, and is about a 20 minute drive from the scenic area.
Special experiences within the scenic area
Limited to scientific research or special permits. In order to protect the ecology, the core area of Dagu Glacier does not provide regular accommodation. Tourists all reside outside the scenic area.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
